Educating 2e Students – Interactive Workshop
About the workshop
Twice-exceptional (2e) students – those who are both gifted and special needs – are extraordinary and challenging. Is it possible to create a classroom environment that will allow 2e students room to thrive within a safety net of support? YES! Identifying 2e students is difficult because gifts mask the challenges and challenges mask the gifts. Learn to see students through a 2e lens and then send appropriate students for testing to 1 confirm your observations. Learn to look at neuropsychological testing holistically to help support students in the classroom. Many 2e students have trouble with output: able to keep up intellectually but behind in homework (especially writing). Instead of asking 2e students to enroll in a less rigorous class, teachers can keep grading fair while adapting assignments and tests. Students whose executive functioning skills are lagging can learn new skills authentically rather than in a class devoted only to study skills. Students who struggle emotionally can gain metacognitive skills and learn to make friends. Jacqui Byrne will share case studies, identify typical 2e traits and how to manage those traits in the classroom, explore talent development as a tool, and discuss classroom and testing accommodations that work. Through stories from real-life classrooms and authentic case studies, attendees will learn about ways to shift the classroom environment, incorporate accommodations, and scaffold the curriculum so that all of their students can be successful. This workshop is appropriate for those who work with gifted students with ADHD, Tourette’s, Autism Spectrum Disorder 1, anxiety disorders, work refusal/school refusal, plus learning and processing challenges
